Case Studies in Documentary Narration
You can view and listen to these documentaries through the YouTube links above and hear how the client’s brief translated to the project.
Seantience
Client: Animal Ethics
Read Style / Brief: Thoughtful, empathetic, scientifically credible smooth delivery. A neutral, natural and serious voice that generates interest in the subject matter, bearing in mind that the subject matter is somewhat dramatic. It is a documentary about animals, but it is not for human entertainment like a National Geographic documentary, it's an appeal for people to help them and get to know other unknown points of view about their reality. It should have gravitas to match the seriousness of the topic, rather than to be narrated as if it is merely something interesting.
Session Details: Self-directed, recorded in Sam’s broadcast-quality home studio. Final files edited & provided via clients preferred FTP. End-client thrilled, this documentary went on to win several awards & the client returned for a second documentary shortly after.
Testimonial: "We have loved working with Samantha. She is fast, efficient and collaborative. Her voice is neutral, pleasant, serious and captivating at the same time without being cloying. We will be counting on her again for other projects!"
Don’t Pet Me
Client: Responsible Reptile Keeping
Read Style / Brief: exposé-style with serious, cautionary notes. Short mini-documentaries from The Business Insider and The Wall Street Journal were provided to serve as inspiration for the tone of this production.
Session Details: Self-directed, no revisions necessary. Voiceover recorded & edited from Sam’s professional home studio. End client and their production company was delighted, stating how easy Sam’s acting abilities & quality had made their life. Client went on to recommend Sam for a large multi-video project.
Testimonial: “Our whole operation relies on us producing professional, credible content, and the voiceover Sam provided lifted our game several notches. She anticipated issues we hadn’t thought to consider and solved them before they could concern us. We couldn’t be happier.
It’s not until you work with a professional voiceover artist that you realise how good the end result can be. It’s a discernible difference that sets our profile a league above our peers. Most importantly, Sam is an absolute delight to work with, and that’s worth it’s weight in gold!”
Context and intent. Two vital pieces any voice actor lives and breathes with every performance.
Note: If you want to understand the difference between “narration” and “performance” and why the success of your project depends upon that distinction, you can read about it here.
What are they and why do they matter?
Context for a performer is the lifeblood of any good storytelling. It informs you with what happened the moment before, and right after.
Intent is what the moment is trying to make the audience feel or understand - and without it, everything falls flat.
The voice choice for your project needs to feel trustworthy. If a voice artist is merely narrating, existing outside the material and just stating the facts of what is happening, there’s a barrier. Performance is deeply immersive, you’re letting the viewer or listener know that you’re in it together. When choosing the voice for your project, ask yourself if the performer knows what you’re trying to elicit from the audience moment to moment.
Think about something as simple as the phrase, “Without it, there was nowhere to go.” How would this sound if the intent is to lighten the mood? Create suspense? Make them realize a power shift has occurred? Now take into account the context around it as well. You’ll have a performance grounded in purpose, steeped in the emotion of the story, true to the very heart of the project itself, moment to moment.
As you prepare the script, allow moments of silence to let the story breathe. A fine-tuned actor will honor those moments, holding space for thought-bridges, intentionally allowing the space amongst the relationship of all the elements. Listeners can feel when something is rushed or disconnected, and when you’ve crafted a top tier film with specific intent, it should be honored with the voice of an actor who will go the extra mile to live inside your message.
A superb documentary or TV narration performance does not distract from the story. With the understanding and application of context and intent, the end experience can be truly powerful.
